Year 5 Llancaiach Fawr MANOR

In order to experience what life was like in the past, Year 5 visited Llancaiach Fawr Manor, a Stuart Household.

Prior to the visit, we read 'Tirion's Secret Journal' - a novel by Jenny Sullivan which is based on life in the Manor.

Tirion, Welsh for 'gentle', is sent away from home by 'Master eyes-and-ears' - her stepfather. She is given the job of Spidercatcher - even though she hates spiders almost as much as she hates her stepfather!

Built in 1530 for Dafydd ap Richard Llancaiach Fawr Manor was designed to be easily defended during the turbulent reigns of Tudor kings and queens.

By the start of the Stuart dynasty the Prichards had prospered and the house was extended in 1628 to demonstrate their status

When Civil War broke out between King and Parliament in 1642 Colonel Prichard was actively involved in raising men and money for the Royalist cause in Glamorganshire.
